ROANOKE, Va. (AP) – The Federal Railroad Administration says the boarding platform at a planned Amtrak station in Roanoke is too low.
Amtrak and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation had proposed a boarding platform that would require using a lift or climbing stairs to enter the rail car.
In a letter obtained by The Roanoke Times (http://bit.ly/1RtCHrN ), the railroad agency’s Office of Civil Rights told Amtrak that a boarding platform level with the rail car’s floor is required.
Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods declined to comment to the newspaper.
A spokeswoman for the state agency, Bethany Wolfe, told the newspaper that the agency generally supports level boarding. She says there were site constraints in Roanoke that presented challenges.
Amtrak plans to establish service from Roanoke to Lynchburg in 2017.
