WASHINGTON — Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe says he received a letter alerting him that the social security numbers of two of his five children were exposed in a recent data breach.
On Wednesday, McAuliffe used the letter as an example of the importance of data security and other protections after a meeting of the Virginia Cyber Security Commission. McAuliffe says he received the letter between two days of cybersecurity announcements.
Hackers got the social security numbers through the Anthem data breach. The giant insurance firm reported the breach affected up to 80 million customers.
The commission, co-chaired by former presidential adviser Richard A. Clarke, aims to have specific recommendations for more improvements before next year’s General Assembly session.
The commission is looking at any needed changes for infrastructure, security, education and more, and the impact the changes could have on economic development and creating jobs.
