WASHINGTON — It may have seemed mysterious at first: William Shatner, of “Star Trek” fame, earlier this month tweeted a request for fans to take a photo of themselves doing the Mr. Spock “Live Long and Prosper” hand sign and email it to a specific address.
I need everyone’s help. Take a selfie of you doing the LLAP sign and email the photo to NIMOYTribute@gmail.com pic.twitter.com/b2gTMftn7J

It turns out there was a method to his madness, Entertainment Weekly reports: Shatner was taking part in GISHWHES — the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen, a brainchild of Misha Collins, one of the stars of The CW show “Supernatural.” We still don’t know exactly how the challenge was worded, because the contest, which raises money for various charities including Random Acts, won’t be announced for another week, but Shatner tweeted the beautiful result:
Why did I ask for all those #LLAP selfies? For a @gishwhes task as a tribute to Leonard. Thank you! pic.twitter.com/3NQZ5siINe
