Classes resume after stage collapse…Pakistan says hostage deaths underscore drone risks…Militant arrests

WESTFIELD, Ind. (AP) — Officials say classes will be held as usual today at a central Indiana high school where more than a dozen people were injured after a stage filled with students collapsed during a musical performance. Authorities say at least one person was critically injured after the stage gave way Thursday night at Westfield High School during the grand finale of the concert dubbed “American Pie.”

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan says the deaths of two hostages during a January U.S. drone strike underline the “risk and unintended consequences of the use of this technology that Pakistan has been highlighting for a long time.” Pakistan, which takes an anti-terrorism stance but opposes the drone strikes, expressed “shock and sorrow” over the deaths. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended condolences.

BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanon, which struggles with the spillover from neighboring Syria’s civil war, says eight wanted militants are accused of terrorist attacks in Lebanon and attacks on the military. The Lebanese army says the eight were arrested during a raid today in the northern town of Akkar. The Lebanese are divided, with some supporting while others siding with Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s prime minister says the immediate priority is to bring the country back to economic health. Arseniy Yatsenyuk (ahr-SEHN’-ee yaht-sehn-YOOK’) tells lawmakers today that there will be no increase to welfare payments until the poverty-stricken country emerges from its security and economic crisis. The government believes Ukraine will return to growth in 2016.

SKOPJE, Macedonia (AP) — Police in Macedonia report at least 14 migrants using an overland route to central and Western Europe have been killed by an express train as they walked along the tracks in a narrow gorge in central Macedonia at night. Migrants and refugees using the overland route often use the train tracks as a path to guide them along their way and to evade police.
