Metro track work leads into extended New Year’s Eve hours

WASHINGTON — Metro will stay open late for New Year’s Eve revelers, but significant track work is scheduled the day before.

On Saturday only, Silver, Orange and Blue line single-tracking will reduce service to every 24 minutes on each line all day, with Silver Line trains only running between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston.

Also, from 9 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve (Sunday), Red Line trains will single-track between Medical Center and Grosvenor-Strathmore, with trains scheduled every 15 minutes. Some additional trains are scheduled during the day between Farragut North and Silver Spring.

No track work is scheduled after 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve.

The Metro system will close at 2 a.m. after the ball drops, which means the last trains leave end-of-line stations as early as 1:10 a.m.

On New Year’s Day Monday, the system will operate on a Sunday schedule. That includes the rail system running only 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
