A look ahead: 2016 Citi Open enters final matches

WASHINGTON — The court temperature might have reached an absurd 141 degrees Saturday at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, site of the 2016 Citi Open. But the competitors — along with the Geico gecko mascot — persevered through the stifling conditions on the hard surface.

The Men’s Final will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday between Ivo Karlovic of Croatia against Gael Monfils of France. On Saturday, Karlovic defeated American Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-4 to advance first, and Monfils got past Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-0 in the second men’s semifinal match.

On the women’s side, Belgium’s Yasina Wickmayer was victorious over Kazakh professional Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 6-2. In the last match on Saturday night, Lauren Davis won in a match between two Americans, defeating Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-3.

Sunday’s first event will be the Men’s Doubles Final between the team of Lukasz Kubot (Poland) and Alexander Peya (Austria) against Daniel Nestor (Canada) and Edouard Roger-Vasselin (France).
