WASHINGTON — New technology will make driving at night safer for more drivers.
Night vision capabilities are becoming available on more cars, making it easier for motorists to see pedestrians or animals on dark roads.
The system developed by auto supplier Autoliv uses infrared technology to detect objects on the road. If it senses someone or something near the road, like a deer, it will highlight it in a yellow box on a screen projected onto the windshield. If that person or object crosses into the path of the car, the box becomes red and the driver will hear an alarm.
Autoliv says this night vision technology can detect objects three times farther than headlights and would help prevent deer collisions.
The technology is mostly seen in higher end cars, but more moderately priced vehicles are expected to see night vision capabilities within the next few years.
