17-1 shot Midnight Storm wins Del Mar Derby

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Midnight Storm won the $300,000 Del Mar Derby by 3¼ lengths on Sunday, and Rafael Bejarano rode six winners on the card.

Ridden by Tyler Baze, Midnight Storm ran 1 1/8 miles on the turf in 1:47.47 and paid $36.60, $16.60 and $8 at 17-1 odds in his stakes debut for trainer Phil D’Amato.

Sawyer’s Hill returned $12.40 and $8 at 12-1 odds, while 8-1 shot Talco was another head back in third and paid $6.80 to show.

Enterprising, the 8-5 favorite, finished sixth.

The victory, worth $180,000, increased Midnight Storm’s career earnings to $285,810, with three wins in seven starts.

Bejarano became the fifth jockey in track history to win six races in a day. He won four races on Saturday, and leads the jockeys’ standings with 40 victories.

Jojo Warrior led all the way in winning the $100,000 Torrey Pines Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by three quarters of a length.

Ridden by Martin Garcia, Jojo Warrior ran one mile on Polytrack in 1:37.10 and paid $4, $2.80 and $2.40 as the even-money favorite.

Tiz Kissable returned $5.80 and $3.60, while Thegirlinthatsong was another half-length back in third and paid $3.40 to show.

It was Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert’s second stakes win of the summer meet, and his fourth career win in the Torrey Pines. He has a leading 107 stakes wins at the seaside track.

The stakes win was the second of the meet for Garcia, but his first in the Torrey Pines. He has 19 stakes wins at Del Mar.

The victory, worth $60,000, increased Jojo Warrior’s career earnings to $260,781, with three wins in six starts.

In the $94,750 Tranquility Stakes, 7-10 favorite Broken Sword won by 5¼ lengths under Rafael Bejarano, who rode five winners on the card.

Broken Sword ran one mile on Polytrack in 1:36.18 and paid $3.40, $2.40 and $2.20.

Oscar Party returned $4.80 and $3.80, while Scooter Bird was another 1¼ lengths back in third and paid $4.40 to show.

The victory was worth $56,400 to Broken Sword, who has four wins in 11 career starts.
