Burton, Aschenbeck lead No. 3 national seed Texas A&M over Texas 4-2 in 11 innings

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Ted Burton drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single in the top of the 11th inning and Evan Aschenbeck did not allow a hit in 4 2/3 innings of relief to lead No. 3 national seed Texas A&M to a 4-2 victory over Texas on Saturday night at the Bryan-College Station Regional.

Texas (36-23) will play Louisiana (41-19) in an elimination game on Sunday. The winner will play Texas A&M (46-13) in the nightcap. If the Aggies lose, the regional championship will be decided in a rematch on Monday with a berth in the super regionals on the line.

The Longhorns grabbed a 1-0 lead when Jared Thomas led off the bottom of the first with a home run off Texas A&M starter Ryan Prager.

The lead held until the Aggies’ Caden Sorrell sent a solo shot over the fence in left field with one in the fifth against Texas starter Lebarron Johnson.

Texas took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when Kimble Schuessler homered with two outs and the bases empty.

Two throwing errors by Longhorns shortstop Jalin Flores allowed the Aggies to knot the score in the eighth.

Prager went the first 6 1/3 innings for the Aggies, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. Aschenbeck (6-1) allowed only a walk while recording the final 14 outs.

Andre Duplantier II (2-2) took the loss after yielding two runs on a hit and two walks in 1 1/3 innings.

Texas A&M has made seven College World Series appearances, most recently in 2022, but has never won it.

Texas has won the CWS six times, most recently in 2005, in 38 appearances. The Longhorns have also finished as the runners-up six times.
