Padres place Musgrove on injured list with elbow inflammation

PHOENIX (AP) — The San Diego Padres placed starting pitcher Joe Musgrove on the injured list with right elbow inflammation, the team said Sunday.

Musgrove has struggled this season, with a 3-3 record and 6.37 ERA in eight starts. The 31-year-old right-hander has allowed a major league-leading 10 home runs in 41 innings.

“We think the timeline is very similar to the (Yu) Darvish situation,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said after Sunday’s 11-4 loss at Arizona. “There’s some inflammation in there so this is a chance for him to get a re-set. We don’t feel like it’s overly serious.”

Darvish missed two starts with neck tightness but returned to the rotation with a victory on Tuesday against Cincinnati.

Musgrove had been scheduled to start Tuesday in Chicago. The Padres recalled Randy Vasquez from Triple-A El Paso and he is a possible starter for the game against the Cubs.

Musgrove was 10-3 with a 3.05 ERA last season but was limited to 17 starts because of shoulder problems. He was an All-Star in 2022 when the Padres went to the NLCS, going 10-7 with a 2.93 ERA in 30 starts.
