Aleksander Barkov scored in overtime and the Florida Panthers — playing a day after coach Joe Quenneville resigned amid a sex scandal — beat Detroit 3-2 on Friday to run their season-opening winning streak to eight.
Quenneville, the second-winningest coach in NHL history, resigned Thursday, two days after being among those implicated for not responding swiftly to allegations by former Chicago player Kyle Beach of being sexually assaulted by then-Blackhawks assistant Brad Aldrich during the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs.
Andrew Brunette, an assistant under Quenneville, directed the Panthers as interim coach.
Barkov scored twice, Eetu Luostarinen had a goal and Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves to help the Panthers move within two of the NHL record for consecutive victories to start a season, set by Toronto in 1993-94 and matched by Buffalo in 2006-07.
Sam Gagner and Pius Suter scored for Detroit, with Suter tying it with 3:41 left in regulation with his first goal of the season.
HURRICANES 6, BLACKHAWKS 3
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Antti Raanta made 23 saves and was a winner in his Carolina debut as the Hurricanes scored four goals in the first period and added to the best start in franchise history by beating winless Chicago.
Tony DeAngelo, Jordan Staal, Derek Stepan, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov scored as Carolina scored four goals on 18 shots in the first period and improved to 7-0-0. DeAngelo and Vincent Trocheck each had two assists.
Brandon Hagel, Adam Gaudette and Alex DeBrincat scored for the Blackhawks (0-6-2). Kevin Lankinen stopped 29 shots.
RANGERS 4, BLUE JACKETS 0
NEW YORK (AP) — Chris Kreider scored two power-play goals, Igor Shesterkin stopped 31 shots for his third career shutout and first this season, and New York beat Columbus for its first home win of the season.
Ryan Strome and Alexis Lafrenière also scored, and Adam Fox and Artemi Panarin each had three assists to help New York get its fifth win in six games. Shesterkin had 12 saves in the first period, seven in the second and 12 in the third to improve to 4-1-1 with a 1.81 goals-against average.
Elvis Merzlikins made 33 saves for Columbus, which lost for the third time in five games and fell to 0-2-0 on the road.
CAPITALS 2, COYOTES 0
WASHINGTON (AP) — John Carlson scored a long-awaited power-play goal, Alex Ovechkin added an empty-netter and Washington handed Arizona its eighth consecutive loss to start the season.
Carlson’s goal with 7:58 left in the third period was Washington’s third in 25 opportunities on the power play dating to opening night. The Capitals came up empty on their first five power-play chances against Arizona before breaking through.
Arizona’s Karel Vejmelka finished with 30 saves, including a few notable stops at even strength to give Arizona a puncher’s chance at its first victory of the season.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS 5, DUCKS 4, SO
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nic Roy and Evgenii Dadonov scored in the shootout and Vegas beat Anaheim.
The Golden Knights survived a scare after Anaheim erased a three-goal deficit in the second half of the third period to force overtime. It was Vegas’ third straight win.
Reilly Smith, Nic Hague, Chandler Stephenson and William Carrier scored in regulation for the Golden Knights, who have won 18 of their 21 all-time meetings against Anaheim. The 18 victories are the most the Golden Knights have against any opponent.
Robin Lehner made 34 saves for Vegas and improved to 3-4-0 this season.
Trevor Zegras, Troy Terry, Isac Lundestrom, and Adam Henrique scored for the Ducks. John Gibson stopped 38 shots. Zegras scored Anaheim’s only goal during the shootout.
SENATORS 4, STARS 1
DALLAS (AP) — Josh Norris score two goals in his U.S. NHL debut, and Ottawa snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over Dallas.
Brady Tkachuk and Connor Brown also scored for Ottawa. Filip Gustavsson made 35 saves in his 12th NHL game.
Joe Pavelski scored in the second period for Dallas. Braden Holtby had 20 saves for the Stars.
