City of Oregon, Ohio wants name change ahead of Buckeye Championship

WASHINGTON — For one day — January 12 —  this town wants to wash its hands of its name.

City leaders in Oregon, Ohio plan to announce a one-day name change on Monday, according to tp the Toledo Free Express.

The reason: Ohio State faces the University of Oregon in the Jan. 12 College Football Playoff National Championship.

The name change was generated through a Change.org petition that had over 1,700 signers  as of Sunday morning. City natives Matt Squibb and Mark Rabbitt put together the petition and hope, too, that the city’s high school, Clay High School, will change its school colors from green and gold (the same as the Oregon Ducks) to the Buckeye colors.

The temporary name has yet to be determined, according to city administrator Michael Beazley, but the city was aware of the movement and petition and “we’re going to do something with it,” he told the paper.

“We’re just two guys going on a website and sparking something that most people would think is probably a really stupid thing, but to have so many people supporting it and then hopefully rooting for Ohio State to win it all is pretty great,” Rabbitt said. “I think it’s pretty good to see a community come together and support them.”
