WASHINGTON — The Redskins 42-24 win over the Packers has stirred a new catchphrase.
As he left the field after Sunday’s victory, quarterback Kirk Cousins yelled, “How do you like me now?” twice as he hugged Redskins general manager Scott McCloughan and slapped his hand.
There is plenty to like about Cousins now. He is creating a body of work that indicates he could be the Redskins long-term answer as quarterback and will likely be offered a long-term contract this off season. But that is long way off.
At 6-3-1, the Redskins hold the final wild card spot in the NFL and there is still work to be done if the team is to secure a playoff berth in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1992.
A win over the Packers is not the statement it used to be. The Packers’ once-feared defense had given up 111 points in three losses before Sunday night and was picked apart again by the Redskins.
That’s not to be a kill joy.
What Cousins accomplished — 375 yards passing with three touchdowns and no interceptions — in 30 mph wind was real and should be celebrated. The 137 yards Robert Kelley gained on the ground was real and should also be celebrated.
Cousins’ phrase, “How do you like me now?” is also very real.
Place the emphasis on the now because Cousins and company have to prove themselves all over again when they play a 9-1 Cowboys team on Thanksgiving that also likes itself right now.
