WASHINGTON — A driver hit and killed a man at an Upper Marlboro shopping center Monday morning, and police say they found an assault rifle near the body of the victim.
Around 8:30 a.m. Monday, a man walking in the Marlborough Village shopping center off Brown Station Road and Marlboro Pike was hit and killed by the driver of an SUV, said Cpl. Harry Bond with Prince Georges County police. The investigation closed one of the shopping center’s parking lots.
“There was a weapon, an assault rifle found at the scene as well. That is under investigation as to how that weapon got there, who the weapon belonged to,” Bond said.
The driver knew the victim, who was his daughter’s boyfriend, sources told WTOP’s broadcast news partners at NBC Washington. Police said an AK-47 was found near the man’s body and they are investigating if he was carrying the weapon.
“It struck me as kind of odd that someone had an assault rifle of that magnitude at that scene,” Bond said.
Police have not released the identity of the victim. The driver stayed at the shopping center after the accident and cooperated with police.
