UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Prince George’s County school leaders and the county’s state’s attorney are discussing how to help the young alleged victims of a man charged with making child pornography.
As the investigation into school volunteer Deonte Carraway broadens to at least 17 victims, Prince George’s County’s newly appointed police chief, Hank Stawinski, said police are looking into how Carraway financed the operation and whether he worked alone. The 17th victim was confirmed Wednesday.
“That’ll tell us if there are more victims out there we’re unaware of. Right now, that’s our daily work,” he said.
The state’s attorney’s office is interviewing witnesses to build a case, and State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks says she hopes more come forward, but that her focus is equally on the victims.
“We want to make sure the children involved in these cases have all the help and therapy they need so they can heal and they wont be perpetrators themselves,” she said.
Alsobrooks called the case against Carraway complex, because police have said the number of victims is likely to grow and the crimes were allegedly perpetrated in multiple locations.
As the case against Carraway is assembled, Alsobrooks says she is working with Prince George’s County Public Schools CEO Kevin Maxwell and Betty Francis, deputy chief administrative officer of the county’s department of Health, Human Services & Education.
