WASHINGTON — A loaded gun was found in a Prince George’s County middle school, according to a letter sent home to parents.
NBC Washington reports that the letter says the weapon was seized Friday by Nicholas Orem Middle School security personnel and Hyattsville police officers after an anonymous tip told them where to look. The student, who hasn’t been identified, was taken into custody.
No students or staff were injured. It’s not known why the student brought the weapon to school.
Principal Theresa Merrifield says in the letter that parents can help prevent situations like this from happening by checking their child’s belongings each morning to ensure no inappropriate items are brought to school.
The student faces disciplinary action from the school. There’s no word on if any other charges will be filed.
