WASHINGTON — Prince George’s County police are investigating an incident involving a man who escaped one of their police cruisers on Saturday afternoon in Hyattsville, Maryland.
The suspect, identified by police as Giovanti Moschino Young, 21, was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by officers in Laurel during a traffic stop.
During that stop, police report that Young assaulted two officers and was taken into custody. Young claimed he was injured and was taken to a hospital to be checked out. The hospital released him back to the police after finding no evidence of injury.
Another officer was taking him to the prisoner processing area in Hyattsville when Young managed to escape the cruiser while handcuffed. The officer confronted him outside the car, at which point the officer says Young spit at him and bit him.
The officer got Young on the ground, still handcuffed, where he continued to struggle against the officer. The officer used a stun gun on Young in an attempt to subdue him. Police said on Sunday that procedures were followed, and Young refused several opportunities to comply with the officer.
Young was taken to a hospital for treatment following the incident. The officer who says he was spit at and bit by Young was also treated for injuries at the hospital.
Young is wanted on armed robbery charges in Howard County, according to police. A dash cam video of the initial struggle at the traffic stop will be made available on Monday.
Meanwhile, a series of videos by an apparent passer-by of the second struggle outside the police cruiser has been confirmed by police as authentic.
