WASHINGTON– The Maryland Department of Agriculture will spray for mosquitoes in Laurel, Md. on Sunday night.
Several neighborhoods in Bowie, Md. were sprayed this week after news of a possible case of West Nile virus in the area.
Md. state health officials say the first confirmed case of West Nile was reported in the Baltimore area.
Spraying in Laurel will continue on Sundays through the end of September.
Here’s how to keep mosquitoes from breeding on your property:
- Empty your kiddie pools.
- Change your pet’s water bowl every day.
- If you have a bird bath, swap in fresh water once a week.
- Fix your dripping faucets and hoses to avoid standing water.
If you go outside early in the morning, or in the evening, wear long and loose-fitting clothing, and apply insect repellent as well.
Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headaches, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph glands. These symptoms will usually show up within 14 days of a bite from a mosquito carrying the disease.
