Republican former Sen. Warner endorses Clinton

WASHINGTON — Former U.S. Sen. John Warner, a Virginia Republican, endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton for president at a event Wednesday in Alexandria.

Warner, a former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and former Secretary of the U.S. Navy, made the announcement at an event headlined by Clinton’s running mate, U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Virginia, at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, on Wythe Street.

Clinton was on the Armed Services Committee with Warner as chairman from 2003 to 2009. Warner served in the Senate from 1979 to 2009 and was chairman or ranking member for 20 years.
