The Charlotte, North Carolina-based company said it had net income of $1.81 per share.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.74 per share.
The electric utility posted revenue of $8.54 billion in the period, also surpassing Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $8.42 billion.
Duke Energy expects full-year earnings in the range of $6.25 to $6.35 per share.
