NATO summit brings road closures, detours to downtown D.C.

Officials from dozens of countries will be in town for this week’s NATO summit. Their arrival is necessitating dozens of road closures in downtown D.C., affecting residents, businesses and commuters.

Security perimeters and closures were put in place starting Saturday in preparation for the summit, which takes place Tuesday through Thursday at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The changes to traffic and commuter pathways will be in place until Friday.

Due to the arrival of delegates from 68 countries — including countries not in NATO — the Metropolitan Police Department announced closures and adjusted traffic patterns in three areas: the convention center, where the summit is primarily held, as well as the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Federal Triangle and the White House.
