Folger Shakespeare Library to reopen after four-year, $80.5M renovation. Here’s a look.

Wherefore art thou Romeo? That question is about to become a little easier to answer. 

The Folger Shakespeare Library at 201 E. Capitol St. SE will reopen to the public Friday after an $80.5 million renovation, including a new 12,000-square-foot wing of exhibition halls. The library has been shuttered since March 2020.

The library’s new attractions, including exhibit spaces and updated garden plazas that flank either side of the building’s marble exterior, were previewed for the media Tuesday.

Designed by Philadelphia-based architectural firm KieranTimberlake, the renovations transformed what was once a sub-basement into a state-of-the-art, interactive display level for the research library and theater, which houses the largest collection of William Shakespeare’s printed works in the world. Adams Pavilion will have two entrances, one through each garden, and will hold treasures once shown only in a limited capacity within the building’s Great Hall, a much smaller space.
