Viewpoint: Real estate apocalypse aside, the office is worth returning to

On a recent Thursday, I wandered from my desk to the desk of Dan Sernovitz, the Washington Business Journal’s senior reporter extraordinaire, dropped my arms on the raised wall of his cubicle and asked in an annoyingly slow drawl, “What’s happening?”

As if I were about to abscond with his red Swingline stapler.

My terrible impression of Bill Lumbergh from “Office Space” notwithstanding, it was a pleasure to walk that 12 feet for no other reason than to check in with a member of the team. It is cathartic to once again experience the buzz of an active newsroom. All due respect to Slack, but its channels don’t do our operation justice.

I was numb to that buzz after 20 years in journalism, before Covid took it all away.

Perhaps, as an executive, you’ve reached the conclusion that the office is unnecessary, that your people do fine remotely and you don’t need to throw good money into space you’re going to use sparingly, if at all. Perhaps your employees have grown…
