Viewpoint: Wellness starts at work — and is the employer’s job

Just like most of the country, the D.C. area is seeing continued, strong job growth. But mounting health and wellness concerns are also affecting the workforce, eating away at productivity.

Lingering health effects from Covid are erasing the equivalent of millions of working days from the economy. But this is only part of the problem.

Workplace mental health is worsening, the D.C.-based National Press Foundation reports. Depression is the leading cause of disability in Americans aged 15 to 44. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, 76% of U.S. workers report at least one mental health symptom, and 84% say their workplace conditions contribute to mental health challenges. This leads to burnout, which hurts businesses in numerous ways.

These challenges exist across the workforce. But some industries have it particularly bad. This is where Washington employers have reason to be especially concerned.
