Viewpoint: Our educational system needs an overhaul to stay relevant

It’s a no-brainer to say that education is at a crossroads in our county and in our country. What’s happening here mirrors what’s happening in much of the country. Among other huge sea changes, the educational experience for most students is stretching out beyond the antiquated and idealized 21-year-old graduate, replaced by “the future fluid student” who might finish formal education at age 25 or 35 while raising children or working a full-time job.

Said simply: We are operating in a 3.0 world — with a focus on meaningful employment as the victory bell in the educational journey. Educational access (1.0) is no longer enough. And college completion (2.0) is no longer enough either.

As a businessperson who currently chairs the Montgomery County Economic Development Corp. and boards at multiple stages of the high school-through-college pathway, I can say that I, too, have been educated: The end game isn’t learning alone. It’s skill development that positions our students…
