Arlington’s EarthOptics has started using blockchain technology to help farmers and food brands monetize sustainable and climate-friendly farming practices through a partnership with Illinois-based agriculture data solutions company Merge Impact.
The multi-year, exclusive agreement adds Merge Impact’s services, powered by Chainsparency blockchain technology, to EarthOptics’ pre-existing services in which farmers pay EarthOptics to perform soil measurements to help increase a farm’s yield and quality while tracking the level of carbon dioxide, or CO2, in soil sets.
EarthOptics said the blockchain technology adds another layer of verification that farmers can then use to show cereal makers and other food producers — and ultimately consumers — that their crops are farmed sustainably and have a positive climate impact. Lars Dyrud, EarthOptics’ CEO, called the tech a “value-add ingredient” for its soil measurement technology and its customers.
