Federal spending bill dedicates at least $175M to D.C.-area transportation systems, projects

The $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill signed Thursday by President Joe Biden earmarks at least $175 million to slew of transportation and related infrastructure projects in Greater Washington.

The biggest chunk of change for the region, by a long shot, goes to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Metro is slated to receive $150 million a year from the U.S. Department of Transportation through 2030 to support its capital budget, Sherri Ly, a spokeswoman for the transit system, said.

That earmark is separate from the millions set aside for pedestrian and cyclist improvements near several Northern Virginia Metro stations. The omnibus package, for example, sets aside $2 million to upgrade sidewalks and intersections around Loudoun County’s new Silver Line Metro stations: Dulles International Airport, Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn.
