Online farmers market Seasonal Roots plots bigger D.C.-area expansion

After coming through a pandemic surge, online farmers market Seasonal Roots is looking to expand to the Baltimore-D.C. metro area.

The Richmond company provides seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as an assortment of local meats and cheeses. Customers order on a weekly basis though an online marketplace. Boxes are packaged and shipped to customers’ homes in Richmond, Fredericksburg, Alexandria and parts of Maryland.

Founder Duane Slyder calls the company “a tech-enabled subscription service” and said the last two years have been a wild ride. When the pandemic hit, people were nervous about grocery shopping and turned to Seasonal Roots. The company saw tremendous growth and just rode the wave.

“We pretty much did what I thought we were going to do,” he said. “We grew 160% in 2020. We just hung on really. We stopped everything that didn’t have anything to do with production and delivery and just tried to help as many people as possible. We’ve shrunk about 25%. And that…
