D.C.’s new most expensive listing is a Gilded Age mansion, though it hasn’t served as a home since the ’50s

Multifamily? Office? One really big house? The new most expensive residential listing in D.C. can be pretty much whatever the new owner wants it to be.

The Bauman Foundation, a progressive advocacy organization, has put 2040 S. St. NW, also known as the Jewett House, on the market for $14.5 million. Michael Rankin of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty is the listing agent for the property, which sits at the border of the Dupont Circle and Kalorama neighborhoods. Rankin said the listing would be live with the Multiple Listing Services this past weekend as residential.

The roughly 16,500-square-foot Georgian Revival mansion was built by Major R. Dickinson Jewett in 1905 to serve as his family’s primary home. It was designed by Marsh & Peter, the architectural firm responsible for the Evening Star Building.
