Mandarin Oriental poised for rebranding under new ownership. This will be its new flag.

The Mandarin Oriental in Southwest D.C. is being primed for a major luxury makeover in connection with its planned sale to a London-based firm later this year.

Middleburg-based Salamander Hotels & Resorts has been tapped to rebrand and manage the 373-room hotel at 1330 Maryland Ave. SW starting Sept. 9, the day after the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group sells the property for $139 million to private equity real estate manager Henderson Park. The rebranding will usher in a new era for the Mandarin Oriental, whose opening in 2004 was a major milestone for the District and its hospitality industry.

The deal is also an entry point for Salamander and its founder and CEO, Sheila Johnson, who has weighed other prospective deals in the District including at City Ridge, the redevelopment of Fannie Mae’s former headquarters.
