Virginia company to bring wind power to Rivian’s electric truck factory

Rivian Automotive Inc., the buzzy electric truck company, is getting a wind turbine at its manufacturing plant thanks to a Virginia company.

The electric vehicle maker, which is based in Irvine, California, said Friday it is partnering with Charlottesville’s Apex Clean Energy Inc. to build a 500-foot turbine at its plant in Normal, Illinois.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The turbine will have a capacity of at least 2.8 megawatts and will be capable of generating nearly 10 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, Rivian said. The company said the turbine, in addition to a planned solar array at the facility, will ensure the R1T trucks and R1S sport utility vehicles built at the plant will be powered for their first charge through renewable energy.

Rivian has faced some delivery delays of late, citing issues related to its supply chain and service infrastructure.
