I’ve been a massage therapist for 11 years, and while I can’t tell you specifics about my clients, I can tell you that in general, right now, I’m feeling a powerful mix of anxiety and eagerness about this “return to normal.” We’re anxious about giving up what the two years gave us and eager to reclaim what it took.
It’s been more than two years of not-peopling five days a week, of not spending (wasting) time in traffic, and of taking more care of ourselves and loved ones in the few hours before and after work.
During the pandemic, when I fell back to my full-time writing gig, I heard countless people of all ages, races and incomes tell me the lessons they were learning. Not a single one said: “You know what? This was all working just fine before. I loved the amount of time I spent away from my family. I think the same people should be in charge forever and that everything is pretty equitable.”
We’re about to find out if all the lessons we learned about capitalism…
