Va. lawmakers opt to delay vote on new Commanders stadium

Virginia lawmakers are delaying votes on legislation aimed at enticing the Washington Commanders to build a new stadium in Northern Virginia, casting some doubt on the effort.

According to reports, support for a pair of bills has waned in recent months as the Commanders front office has been embroiled in controversies surrounding alleged sexual harassment and financial improprieties. There appeared to be broad backing for the stadium effort at the start of 2022, with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle promoting efforts to lure the team to Virginia. Gov. Glenn Youngkin even went so far to endorse the effort in his inauguration speech in January.

But lawmakers indicated Tuesday that a pair of bills that would create tax incentives to lure the Commanders would not receive votes in the General Assembly on Wednesday — as had been initially suggested.
