Metro takes over Silver Line extension, kicking off final testing and training

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has now taken the keys to the $2.8 billion Silver Line extension.

Metro announced Thursday that, as of 6 a.m., the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority had formally handed over the project after overseeing the construction of 11.4 miles of new track, six new stations and a new rail yard. This step is called “operational readiness;” getting to this critical phase has faced more than two years of delays.

“This milestone enables our team to test the tracks and systems, train and familiarize our workforce on yard operations, mainline and stations and ensure that we provide safe and reliable service for customers on the extension,” Andy Off, Metro’s interim CEO and general manager, said in a statement.

The second phase of the Silver Line doesn’t have an exact opening date, but Off said during Metro’s board of directors meeting on Thursday morning it would be “late fall.” Before then, Metro has to launch 90 days of prerevenue…
