Language-learning app Pangea Chat is heading into the classroom — a lot of them

Pangea Chat, a language-learning company based in Richmond, has made a series of hires aimed at enhancing its app — and is bringing it into the classroom on a widespread basis in the fall.

A $256,000 National Science Foundation business innovation and research grant awarded in March allowed the company, which is at the pre-revenue stage, to bring on new staff and embark on research of its platform, which assesses language learning within the context of text chat.

Founder and CEO Will Jordan-Cooley created Pangea Chat in 2017 after living in Barcelona, Spain, with no knowledge of the Spanish language. As an experiential learner, he said he felt frustrated with other language apps for not being relevant or useful to his immediate needs.
