After soccer fans in Greater Washington learned last week the region will not host World Cup matches in 2026, Major League Soccer is offering something of a consolation prize.
Commissioner Don Garber announced Thursday that MLS will hold its 2023 All-Star Game at D.C. United’s Audi Field. It’ll be the first time the showcase will make its way to the District since the 2004 All-Star Game was played at RFK Stadium.
“Just a few years ago, this stadium that so many people worked so long on envisioning and then ultimately getting built, was something people were still working for,” Garber said in an interview. “What better way to sort of reward the club and everything that it represents than having another All-Star Game. So it just makes a lot of sense and I can’t wait for next summer.”
The 20,000-seat Audi Field hasn’t hosted a major league showcase since it opened in July 2018. It should get some shine next month when United hosts German powerhouse Bayern Munich in a friendly.…
