Art Walsh, Northern Virginia land-use attorney who was integral to region’s growth, dies

Martin D. “Art” Walsh, co-founder of one of the most prolific land-use law firms in Northern Virginia, died Monday at the age of 78, his firm announced. A cause of death was not released.

What is today known as Walsh, Colucci, Lubeley and Walsh, branded as “The Land Lawyers,” was founded in 1983 by Art Walsh, Thomas Colucci, Nicholas Malinchak and Jerry Emrich. Nan Walsh, Art Walsh’s wife, and Mike Lubeley would join the next year, expanding the firm’s presence to Prince William County. The firm would go on to be synonymous with Northern Virginia’s explosive growth, from inside the Beltway to the far-flung suburbs — it would later open offices in Loudoun and Winchester. And Walsh was among its go-to attorneys.

“Art was an amazing law partner and great friend and our association together goes back nearly 49 years,” Colucci said in an email.
