Viewpoint: Without Trump hotel, Pennsylvania Avenue can be great again

From now on, let’s keep politics off Pennsylvania Avenue. 

On the face of it, it’s a ridiculous statement, for a corridor capped on one end by the White House and on the other by the U.S. Capitol, for a 1.2-mile stretch of roadway lined by the likes of the FBI, IRS, Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Justice. These are the quintessential corridors of power, where law, policy, great visions and just the worst ideas are given life, or allowed to die.

But there’s more to America’s Main Street than the power brokering behind its monumental walls. It’s a street, after all, and we know it could be much better. It’s terribly dull in parts, excessively imposing in others. It lacks attractive retail and a strong residential component. It’s not kind to pedestrians who might venture there from the National Mall or Central Business District — so they stay away. 

Roughly a decade ago, we were poised to make great strides.
