GTM Architects’ Steven Sorrell mixes dining and design

Can you remember the coolest-looking restaurant you’ve visited in D.C.? Odds are, you can thank Steven Sorrell.

In 19 years in commercial interiors, Sorrell has designed many a space, the last seven from atop his eponymous Sorrell Design. But he quickly took a shine to hospitality interiors, with Metrobar, Gregorio’s Trattoria, Captain Cookie, City-State Brewery and Plane Jane Salon all on his roster.

This year, Sorrell joined GTM Architects of Bethesda as vice president of commercial interiors, cementing a partnership on plenty of projects over the years. At the 52-person GTM, which reported $12.03 million in 2020 revenue — $7.8 million of it in interior design, per Washington Business Journal research — Sorrell can focus on the design and development work he does best, as he brings over several members of his former firm to be part of the new team.
