Til Hazel, leading figure in Northern Virginia’s economic boom, dies

Northern Virginia lost one of its leading lights from the last century in Til Hazel, who died Tuesday at age 91.

Jimmy Hazel, the third of Til Hazel’s four children, confirmed his father’s death, saying it was of natural causes.

A renowned lawyer and real estate developer, Til Hazel was an extraordinarily influential figure in land-use law and the growth of Northern Virginia, particularly Fairfax County, in the 1960s and ’70s. When people talk of him, they commonly use the word “vision.”

“He was truly a visionary,” Bob Buchanan, a longtime developer in the region, told the Washington Business Journal. “He was the first among equals” in a leading group of men who laid the groundwork for Fairfax to become the economic powerhouse it is today.
