We can’t say exactly when the 11.4-mile Silver Line extension from Reston to Ashburn will open, except to say it will not be before June.
While the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which is overseeing the line’s construction, previously suggested a spring launch was plausible, it now appears to be off the table because testing is taking longer than the planned 60 days. The decision of when to open will ultimately fall to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s board of directors.
Metro-directed operational readiness testing was scheduled to conclude in December, said Drew Hascall, acting senior vice president of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project for the airports authority, during the agency’s virtual committee meeting on Wednesday. But, as of Feb. 28, it was only 74% complete, and will extend through the end of March, he said.
