Play ball! Major League Baseball, players union announce agreement

The lockout that extended Major League Baseball’s offseason is over after 99 days.

The league and players reached an agreement Thursday that will allow spring training to start now and the regular season to begin on April 7, MLB.com reported. Both sides still must ratify the agreement, but a wild and fast-paced free agency period is expected to begin Thursday night as teams work to make themselves whole in short order.

The Washington Nationals are scheduled to play the New York Mets at Nationals Park on April 7. On Wednesday, the MLB announced that it would push back Opening Day to April 14 unless an agreement could be reached.

The Nationals season was originally supposed to start March 31 in New York against the Mets, with the first home game scheduled for April 4 against the Phillies. Getting the season underway as close to schedule as possible is key for Capitol Riverfront businesses amid largely lifted Covid restrictions.
