New Amazon policy lets hourly employees enroll at two local colleges on the company’s dime

Amazon.com Inc. said Wednesday it’s partnering with Northern Virginia Community College and University of Maryland Global Campus to offer hourly employees at its local fulfillment centers a chance to take courses and pursue a degree, with the bill covered by the tech giant.

The new employee benefit is offered through Amazon’s Career Choice program as part of its Upskilling 2025 pledge to invest $1.2 billion in education and skills training for 300,000 of its employees nationwide by 2025. Employees must have worked at Amazon for 90 days to be eligible, after which they can participate each year to pursue a bachelor’s degree, build English language skills, earn their GED or complete other industry certifications to boost their job prospects.

Amazon employees can take the courses online or in-person at UMGC’s Crystal City site or one of NOVA’s campuses, or at the company’s Career Choice classrooms located at its fulfillment centers in Chester, Virginia, and in Baltimore and Sparrows…
