Leah Sanders has used her voice to argue several important cases in her previous career as a lawyer. But lately, her overarching message has become much more simple: thank you.

“This sounds silly, but I want my employees to hear they’re appreciated over the phone,” she says. “That seems a bit lost in our society. I set time aside to make sure I call at least five employees because I genuinely want to know how they’re doing and that I’m thinking about them.”

She has good reason to check in with her employees. Sanders says she wants to make sure every one of them knows they’re a big part of the success of the Woodbridge company she leads today, D&G Support Services. In 2020, she moved up from chief growth officer to CEO of the government contractor. That same year, it hired 21 new employees, reflecting a growth rate of 54% for the company, which counted 34 government contracts for work spanning from IT to logistics services.
