Washington has changed a great deal in Benjamin Wu’s time. But he’s no stranger to adaptation.

Wu has stood at command at many levels of government, serving as Maryland’s secretary of commerce, a U.S. deputy undersecretary of commerce, a U.S. assistant secretary of commerce and Maryland’s assistant secretary of business and economic development. Impressive titles, but all revolve around the same goal: helping companies, big and small, grow even more. He wrapped those experiences together in 2019, when he was named the head of Maryland County Economic Development Corp. in Rockville.

Those extensive experiences across goveranmental fronts also helped him react to the Covid-19 pandemic as thousands of Montgomery County businesses took a hit from lockdowns and event cancellations. MCEDC — which has a staff of 19 and a budget of $5 million — formulated a business grant assistance program that doled out $22 million in grants for companies to remain open and sustain themselves…
