Arlene Wube

For Arlene Wube, her first job turned out to be a lifetime calling.

After seeing a flyer for a job at UrbanPromise, she joined the New Jersey education nonprofit, moving up within the organization to work directly with its executive director, Jodina Hicks, in managing the office and payroll at the age of 13. Years later, during her sophomore year at Howard University, she almost wasn’t able to continue her education. She found out she was short $4,000 on her tuition, all due within mere days.

Wube thought there was no way she could come up with the money, but Hicks had another idea. They turned to Bruce Main, founder and president of UrbanPromise, and started a collection to raise the money. With that, Wube was able to stay on at Howard.

That experience showed her that challenges can be overcome, no matter their size. That philosophy was critical when Wube started her D.C. government contracting company, Arlo Solutions, in 2014 with her business partner, Lonye Ford, the company’s…
