How MWAA’s new chief revenue officer is readying the airports for recovery

Chryssa Westerlund hopes that Greater Washington air travel and its impact on the local economy and tourism is on the upswing.

The executive vice president and chief revenue officer of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, whose promotion the agency announced Jan. 27, has been there for seven years — the first five of which she spent working to increase the agency’s nonairline revenue streams.

That was before Covid, and everyone knows the story of its hit to air travel and everything that goes along with it, including concessions at Reagan National and Dulles International airports — some of which are still closed.

“We are laser-focused on growth, on controlling costs, on delivering value, and so over the course of the pandemic we kept that focus,” Westerlund said in an interview with the Washington Business Journal. “We’re still recovering financially, but I think we’re in a strong place and we have a clear vision for recovery and then growth again.”
