Georgia Hoyler couldn’t find the right vintage rug for her D.C. rowhome. That search launched a business.

About the business: Passerine finds, sources and delivers top-of-the-market vintage rugs from around the world, helping to furnish high-end homes around Greater Washington. Its customer base falls into two categories — rug collectors and highly curated interior designers.

These are no ordinary rugs — many are Persian, Syrian or Turkish in origin, hand-knotted and often decades old. Many range from $2,000 to $5,000, but on the upper end, the company has a range of rugs that market up to $14,000 as well.

How it started: The idea came to founder Georgia Hoyler when she bought her first rowhome in the District in 2019. She had wanted to find something unique and avoid trendy looks from big-box retailers while appreciating handcrafted work that had a little history behind it.

“I’m probably the most risk-averse entrepreneur you will meet,” Hoyler said. “But when I got started at this, it was because so many people were looking for what I was, and no one could find it.”
