The waiting and the guessing are finally over: Washington’s NFL franchise will now officially be known as the Washington Commanders.
Team representatives introduced the new name Wednesday morning on NBC’s “Today.” The franchise is keeping its longtime colors of burgundy and gold, but did show off a new black uniform along with white and burgundy jerseys. There’s also a new “W” logo on the helmets.
Team President Jason Wright told Craig Melvin of “Today” the team will work with fans to create a new mascot and fight song.
“It’s a name that has the weight and meaning befitting a 90-year-old franchise,” said Wright, adding that he believes the Commanders embodies the values of “service and leadership” and its a brand the team can own and grow over the next 90 years.
“This is just the launch of the brand,” he said.
