Viewpoint: The good, bad and ugly of an unexpectedly speedy 2021

For as long as 2020 dragged and loitered and stubbornly skulked along, 2021 was a sudden, head-spinning burst. It started and ended faster than I could take account.

The year, of course, began horrendously, with unforgivable and inhumane violence Jan. 6 across the steps and inside the halls of our emblem of democracy — uncalled-for behavior no matter how exasperating its inhabitants may be on all the other days. But 2021’s finale feels like nothing’s actually finished. I expected more. More answers. More resolution. More conclusions.

There’s assuredly progress, as no fewer than 10 cumulative injections into our family’s arms will attest, but it still seems more prologue than happy ending as all too many arms remain untouched and all too many hospital beds remain packed.
